Structured cabling

Structured cabling

Structured cabling is the backbone of modern communication networks. It involves laying out and organizing all the low-voltage cabling (data, voice, video, control systems, etc.) in a unified and scalable way, so that devices and systems can interconnect efficiently now and in the future.

Main Components of Structured Cabling

  1. Entrance Facility (EF)
Where external service provider lines enter the building.

  2. Equipment Room (ER)
Central location for network/server hardware like routers, switches, and patch panels.

  3. Telecommunications Room (TR)
Intermediate point that connects backbone cabling to horizontal cabling.

  4. Backbone Cabling
High-capacity cabling (usually fiber or Cat6A/Cat7) connecting various rooms and buildings.

  5. Horizontal Cabling
Cabling that runs from the TR to individual work areas (desks, phones, TVs, etc.)

  6. Work Area Components
Cables, wall outlets, connectors, and patch cords that interface with user devices.

  7. Patch Panels & Racks
Neatly organize cable terminations for easy management and troubleshooting.
